Another One Falls

A large, rugged and distinctive off-road SUV has been reduced to an over-sized station wagon– again– whose unimpressive styling could easily be mistaken for any number of competitors already on the road.  If it wasn’t enough to lose the truck-based Ford Explorer, now too the Nissan Pathfinder has fallen, sadly enough.

If gas mileage is your priority while never leaving pavement, the all-new lighter unibody V-6 Pathfinder might present some appeal.  However, if you enjoy navigating eight cylinders through snow, sand and other sorts of challenging terrain– and don’t mind paying for it– you just might miss what’s no longer.  I know I do.

The One.

Of all the timeless and elegant automotive creations I admire– and aspire to own– this uncomplicated ’80s classic remains at the top of my list.  There’s nothing quite like a well-maintained factory original to command my attention, in red of course.  Recalling my prize sighting two years ago, a 560 SL is still the one in my book!

On The Nose.

“This must be a 1958,” I declared with quick yet careful thought, if not just calculated guessing.  “You hit it right on the nose,” the gentleman replied.  “1958 it is.”  Oh, how I love it when I’m dead-on with MBZ model years!

Spotting it well ahead of me in the gray-sky distance while cycling through Golden Gate Park, I knew right away this one would stop me in my tracks.  And let me tell you, it was well worth my break in cadence, not to mention an excellent photo-op.  What I had the good timing to encounter has to be the most pristine Mercedes-Benz 190 SL I believe I’ve ever seen in the open air, outside of a showroom or auto show that is.

If you’re even more spellbound than I am and happen to have a bit of cash to spare, this timeless automotive masterpiece can most certainly be yours.  All Steve at CarPlanet will need is the money of course.  See if you can guess this classic’s asking price; you might just hit the figure on the nose!

It’s Different, Apparently.

So I found the answer:  6.5 inches shorter, 3.3 inches narrower, and 4.6 inches lower.  If you happen to be pondering the same question I did, then these specifications might satisfy at least your initial curiosity as well.  Suffice to say– even with some challenge to the immediate naked eye– several key differences do exist between the new BMW X1 and its close sibling the X3.  We’ll soon see how well the X1 is received here in the U.S., eye-catching as this little guy is.  Of course success might depend on whether you choose to call it a crossover or an SU– pardon me– SAV.  As I’m not one for “crossovers” myself, let’s go with the latter.

Yet Another “Coupe” in the Mix

“It would be great if the automakers’ marketing departments would please cease and desist when it comes to trying to push these prettier sedans on us as though they were actually coupes. They just aren’t.”               (Matt Davis, AutoBlog.com)

I entirely concur.  Sure, the 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is an attractive machine, a bit sleeker and more eye-catching than the current 3 or 5, though still no dramatic departure from its relatives.  In any case, what’s here called a “coupe” looks suspiciously to me like a new sedan in the family.  It seems this could very well have been badged and sold as the new 5 Series, which certainly would have been an exciting move in itself.  Instead, we’re treated to yet another dose of head-scratching marketing strategy, as German automakers apparently race to keep up with– and perhaps manage to outdo– each other with the latest “coupe” in the mix.

My own preference in this unusual automotive category remains unchanged.  Line up this new 6 next to the CLS and the A7, and still, as I’ve mentioned, I’ll take a Panamera any day!

Untouched & Unmistakable

1967

2012

Some designs in the automotive world never change, nor should they.  As we now approach the 50th anniversary of a beloved icon that debuted in 1963, and throughout this past half-century of remarkable technological advancement, the basic shape remains largely untouched and refreshingly unmistakable.

In other words, a Porsche 911 is and seemingly always will be, well, a Porsche 911.  Having recently enjoyed my first roadside spotting of 911’s newest incarnation– the seventh-generation 991— among all else, the longer, flatter tail lights immediately flagged a striking resemblance to its oldest predecessors.  Before delving further into the features of this amazingly advanced machine, I was already both impressed and nostalgic.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche clearly made an indelible mark on the auto industry, while living long enough to see this latest version of his half-century-old creation.  May he now rest in peace.  And may all future 911 generations continue to respect and preserve Mr. Porsche’s original, one-of-a-kind design.

Those Were The Days

In the spirit of that famous TV theme line “girls were girls and men were men,” I’m thinking now of a time ever so long ago when “5’s were 5’s and 3’s were 3’s.”

Take 1987, during my just-beginning-to-learn-to-drive heyday of knowing my car models while imagining the one I wanted to have.  The clear difference between BMW’s 3 Series and 5 Series could be spotted a mile away.

                                                                                        I’m afraid the same cannot be said in 2012, not even from a few feet away, let alone a mile.  Upon my first glance of the “all-new” sixth generation 3 Series, I really did think I was looking at a 5.  Only upon my surprise of seeing the trunk lid badge was I corrected.

Can you see an immediate difference?  Call me old-fashioned if you will, but I wish we could still easily distinguish between a manufacturer’s major models.  Unfortunately, as I’ve lamented before, everything looks the same.  And here– modern-day technology notwithstanding– is yet another example.

And so the theme song finishes, as I too sing:  “Those were the days!”

Driving The Past Into the Future

More captivating to me than any moment in last night’s enjoyable yet typical Oscars telecast is a commercial that preceded the show’s opening, one powerfully rich in historical presentation, striking a beautiful balance between the past and the present, while launching viewers into an exciting immediate future.

Seconds into the one-minute spot, I was riveted.  As the visual timeline unfolded, I watched closely in awe, smiling all the more.  By the end I was breathless, sold on the “breathtaking” item at hand.  To the advertising professionals who created this piece, I applaud a job beyond well done, thankful for yet another wonderful MBZ showcase I will enjoy watching again… and again.  This product indeed has a lifelong hold on me, after all.

History “drives” us into the future.  True as this can be in most aspects of life, it’s certainly a very powerful advertising principle, one that always works for me no doubt.  This said, the commercial is here for all you car lovers and Mercedes-Benz aficionados to enjoy as much as I do.

A First!

While never before thinking I’d say so, I’m saying it now:  I’m impressed.

This is to say, my first glance has me looking twice– three or four times even– at not an Aston Martin or a Jaguar as the front-end lines might suggest, but rather at what indeed happens to be– yes, it is– a Ford sedan.  This all-new 2013 Fusion quickly captured my attention, which I must say for most any Ford product is a first!

Perhaps we’re left to wonder what this evolving American automaker has in store across the board in the next few years.  And no doubt this is exactly what Ford expects us to do.

Classique Du Jour

Yet another impressively well maintained, original-plated automotive classic stopped me in my pedaling tracks this morning, this one on Lake Street outside the Presidio.  We’re looking here at a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado— hub caps, moldings and badges all intact– with if not its factory paint job, still very likely its original metallic color.  Once again, I pause with a nod of appreciation for this “classic of the day.”

Two in One

The sightings of classic Mercedes-Benz automobiles– two of them, in one day, and in the same neighborhood that is– no doubt call out for a camera.

First we see a 1966 230 SL, followed by a 1972 250 C, both well used yet more than decently maintained.  Not only are these two magnificent cars obviously still on the road, but even better– they’re both still on the road with their original license plates, thus adorning the badge that marks their true age, while allowing a California license plate numbers guy like myself to pinpoint their precise model years and months of purchase.

All in all, I say this was a terrific day to be on foot in San Francisco’s Lower Haight!

Keeping Up The Average

The story piqued my interest, but by no means did it surprise me.  The fact of the matter is:  Cars these days do indeed last longer, regardless of one’s preference for– or ability to buy– a new one.

I’ve argued time and time again for new cars over older ones.  Since the mid ’90s, this typically seems the way to go, for the sake of technical enhancements and luxury appointments, if nothing else.  However, my argument changes tack as certain cars get older, given those classic and nostalgic elements born of days when manufacturers actually distinguished themselves from one another.  (Read:  Most everything today looks the same.)  A 1970s Mercedes or a 1980s BMW is much more head-turning than just about any average 2012 model, as long as it’s well maintained of course– not to mention the often-staggering cost of upkeep.  I suppose it boils down to the difference between a car driver and a car lover, of which naturally I’m both.

All this in mind, today I walked past the very model you see below, stopping in awe for a moment or two.  And then I thought of the story again, mindful of that average age, one that’s no doubt kept up and ever-growing by rare yet beautiful gems such as this!  In this case, “old” wins, while in other instances, it’s time for new– or newer.  After all, I’m afraid your broken-down 1981 Chevette just won’t cut it.

Unlike Most…

The rather low-key event once again came and went during Thanksgiving week, as it annually does.  Among them all, six distinctive automobiles most impressed me at this year’s San Francisco Auto Show.  Worry not if you missed your trip to the Moscone Center, as you didn’t miss all that much relatively speaking– that is, as far as major auto shows throughout the country are concerned.

San Francisco’s collective display of automotive marvel remains small, quiet and surprisingly absent of many popular models.  Nonetheless, a stroll around the convention hall floor does quickly prove educational.  Among the random tidbits I learned last week, the Acura RL’s console layout is shockingly microscopic, Volvo needs to put some flair into its sterile dashboard panels, the four-door Mini is anything but, and there is absolutely no way I could possibly fathom myself or anyone else ever shelling out $58K for anything called a Hyundai.

Not to sound excessively critical, plenty of “auto good” wove its way through the show, which brings me to the above six photos.  The following models have earned my own unspoken awards:

1.  Fiat 500:  Most in need of a spin.

2.  Range Rover Evoque:  Most worthy of a second glance.

3.  Lexus LS460:  Most comfortable seating.

4.  Audi A8L:  Most handsome body overall.

5 & 6.  1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL & 1965 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham:  Most to be admired.

The last two tie for what I consider to be the most stunning pieces on display throughout the entire convention hall.  Leave it to me, of course, to pledge my allegiance first and foremost to the classics!

As I mentioned last year, present-day Mercedes-Benz was once again missing from the floor, while the always-beckoning Porsche Panamera this time around remained locked.  Regardless, the show’s extensive historical section was alone well worth the $9 entrance fee.  After all, while everything new blends into sameness after a short while, automotive legends naturally stand proudly on their own four unmatched wheels.

Altogether, from BMWs that clearly build upon their longstanding stature, to Volkswagens with styling that prompts me to take a nap, the San Francisco Auto Show came through again in its own understated way.  Multiple absences notwithstanding, it’s an easily navigable and surprisingly uncrowded venue from which to gain some insight into a somewhat wide array of both fine and not-so-fine machines.  Just like my select handful of “winners,” the show altogether– either way you look at it– remains unlike most.

And that’s, yet again, my automotive opinion.

Momentarily Mistaken…

“What brand new car is this I’m approaching on my street?  I think it’s an Infiniti G Convertible, or — wait — perhaps a Lexus IS C.  It’s dark outside, so I’ll just keep walking closer for a better look.”

My inquisitive mental dialogue continued until I was upon the car with my certain answer.  I was looking, for my first time, at a 2012 BMW 650i Convertible.  While of course this grand machine is larger in every way than the Infiniti and the Lexus for which it was momentarily mistaken, I couldn’t help but lament the possibility of the all-new 6 Series being — well — mistaken for an Infiniti or a Lexus.

Engine enhancement, technical improvements and new luxury appointments notwithstanding, the third-generation 6 is looking like too many of its close relatives, namely a 3 on steroids or a 5 missing a top.  The now “old” model that lived through 2011 was far more distinctive and unmistakable in its styling; no other BMW looked like it, especially from rear view.  The newest incarnation does not demonstrate the same uniqueness, I’m sorry to say, at least not on first glance.

Still, whether momentarily mistaken for a related model — or worse, for something of a rival manufacturer — the 2012 BMW 6 Series seems altogether poised to once again prove itself the automotive marvel it’s always been.

And that’s my opinion.  What do you think?

As I researched photos of various car models at work today, this one quickly grabbed and held my attention.  It remains by far my favorite of the day, while speaking powerfully to the passage of time without saying a word.  Here’s to the evolution of the BMW 5 Series through the years, represented by all six generations in one striking eyeshot.  Remarkable, I say.

Double Take?

It’s sure to be a winner, or at least that’s my overall feeling at this early point.  I already praised it months ago.  At the same time, I feel compelled to suggest that if you cut off the front end from your line of sight and gaze at the car’s side profile, you might do a double take and wonder for a moment whether or not you’re looking at a BMW 3-Series Coupe.  Not to knock MBZ styling, of course, at least not until absolutely necessary.

No doubt the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe will introduce some serious competition to its supposed lookalike.  I’m looking forward to it.

One of a Kind

Disagree as you might, this one is growing on me.  While the Porsche Panamera has been on my radar for well over a year now, throughout this time my admiration has not faded.  In fact, every time we cross paths on the road, which is not all that often, I have to say I appreciate this four-door novelty just a little more.

The fact of the matter is, there’s nothing else quite like it.  This uniqueness in itself is reason for praise, or at least some constructive consideration.  While some critics have already pooh-pooed the Panamera, it stands out to me as one of a kind.

Of course, I’ll take mine in red.

Upon First Glance…

In the wake of all the praise I’ve been showering onto Mercedes-Benz these days in terms of styling– or that is, restyling– it looks like I must now turn a different nozzle, sadly enough.

Upon first exterior glance it looks like the child of an Acura MDX and a Honda Odyssey, an ordinary one at that.  The interior, I will say, is beautiful, but this of course does not make the immediate first impression.  My initial reaction to the new 2012 M-Class:  I’m disappointed, especially considering Mercedes-Benz’ recent design jackpots.

Not The Same…

Sans famous Gullwing doors

 

Word that Mercedes-Benz is producing a roadster version of its nostalgia-inspired gorgeous technological marvel, the SLS, comes as not too much of a surprise.  After all, a roadster followed the original 1954 300 SL Gullwing, and automotive history tends to enjoy repeating itself these days.

Going soft overhead, however, quickly eliminates the most distinctive and famous feature of the SLS.  This is, of course, the unmistakable doors that open overhead, giving the 1954 redux its one-of-a-kind Gullwing name.

No doubt an amazing feat of technology wrapped in a bold and distinctive shell, the doors are what visually define the SLS’ true character and unmatched place.  While countless luxury convertibles exist and compete in all forms, there is only one Gullwing.  An SLS roadster is just not the same.

And that’s– likely not just my– opinion.

The Gullwing stands alone, proudly so.

Any Day Now…

From the rear it looks a lot like a BMW.  Facing front, it definitely shows itself to be the Audi it is.  A few lines and curves may have been slightly enhanced, but on first glance it does not strike me as something entirely new.  Rarely does Audi have this effect, after all.

Then, on second glance, and third, and so on, the newness does begin to set in, I will admit.  You might not even know at first it’s a hatchback.  It might be able to give the BMW 5 Grand Turismo a run for its money, but no matter what anyone might say, it’s certainly no “answer to the CLS.” 

There goes my opinion again, to say the least.  We’ll let the new Audi A7 speak for itself, and speak to me, as soon as I spot one for the first time in my neighborhood…. any day now I expect.

Improving On Success

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS: Stunning!

As I’ve previously discussed, Mercedes-Benz styling is on a refreshing upswing these days.  While several models have recently been reemerging more handsome than ever, here now comes one more.

The 2012 CLS is simply stunning, all the way from the aggressive and muscular nose to a smooth and refined backside.  While the first-generation CLS has certainly been unique and eye-catching over the past six years, the second generation clearly and boldly improves upon success. In addition to looks, meanwhile, the mechanics of the new CLS may very well prove superior to those of often-troubled rival Jaguar XF.

As the reviews trickle in, I look forward to witnessing this welcome new member of the MBZ family take its rightful place on the open road.

The Diesel Comeback

Today’s growing production of diesel-engine cars, especially large diesel luxury cars, has certainly piqued my interest.  First, I think, it’s the early 1980s all over again, when at one point Mercedes-Benz offered five diesel-engine models in its U.S. lineup.  Granted, if nothing else, this time around has already proven much cleaner and quieter.

Then, I continue to think, it’s time for me to get out and drive at least a couple of the various new luxury diesel models, to really see and feel what diesel-circa-2011 is all about.  (Personal diesel trucks have existed all along and are another story altogether.)  The last occasion on which I recall driving a diesel car was in 1992, when I enjoyed the use of a 1982 300 SD.  Clearly, times have since evolved, and it’s safe to guess that diesels of today, with a nod to Audi, will accelerate faster than I can run!

If diesels are now or becoming poised to compete with hybrids, while offering competitive MPG with superior power, then I’m all for it.  After all, my hybrid-driving experience has thus far yielded about as much satisfaction as riding a city bus.  The diesel comeback has my attention.  Now let’s see if it wins!

Automotive Time Warp

A fascinating journey back in time it was, as I felt in some moments I was reading the article on the date it actually first appeared.  Suffice to say, this piece published in Car and Driver on the numerically catching date of 7-7-77 is well worth a relaxing and informative read for car lovers who appreciate distinctive events of automotive history.

It’s likely no surprise by now as to what make of car I’m discussing here.  The surprises, for me, were for one, that the fastest production sedan in the world at the time, putting out by today’s standards a paltry 286 HP, cost just $40,000 in 1977, and for another, that apparently you could then buy a Rolls Royce for the same price.   No doubt 40 Gs made for a very large amount of money for any car 34 years ago.  Still, I thought the model at hand would have cost a bit more, considering I recall one of its somewhat-lesser relatives costing $39,000 in 1980.  And RR would presumably have been on its own higher plateau, much like today.

The subject of this article remains on my lifetime wish list of models I would love to own.  Many similar enthusiasts share my sentiment, and the buys are definitely out there.  But no power seats?!   Shocking indeed.

If you’re so inclined as some form of a car nut, sit down with a cup of coffee and experience the same automotive time warp that I did.  For all you may already know, there’s certainly enough material at hand to learn something new and interesting.

“Welcome to the Family”

In that fantastic Mercedes-Benz commercial that aired during the Super Bowl ten days ago, four new models were “welcomed to the family.”  At that time, I quietly contemplated my surprising realization that I could not immediately name one of them.  We saw the second-generation CLS, the third-generation SLK, the elegantly reigning SLS, and… a fourth emerging family member whom I myself had not yet identified.

The mystery, for me at least, has ended.  Yet another exciting and welcome addition to the MBZ line has been revealed in its entirety, via the Mercedes-Benz Facebook page among other outlets.  My instant take is this:  The new car is handsome overall, even more so when its muscular lines are looked upon from the front and side; the model is very sensible and practical in its place in the lengthy MBZ hierarchy; and perhaps most of all, this addition is sure to be an immediate and formidable rival to its already-established competition, namely the BMW 3-series models of two doors.

I join Mercedes-Benz in welcoming to the family, the all-new C-Class Coupe!

My Winners

It should come as no surprise that my favorite Super Bowl commercials were those for cars.  Perhaps the surprise lies in the idea that a rival to my always-preferred Mercedes-Benz seems to have stolen the show, at least in my book.

Of course the MBZ spot was absolutely fantastic and powerfully moving, so to speak, laden with captivating nostalgia while launching us into an exciting future.  It’s at least my number two.  Then, another extensively and brilliantly produced car spot held my attention all the way to its disappointing finish.  In this case, the revelation of just exactly the car being advertised was a pure let down.  Sorry KIA, while your spot had me going there, you yourself don’t excite me.  Thankfully, I got a good chuckle out of BMW’s ad for the 335d, as it poked exaggerated yet somewhat truthful fun at the various “dirty” diesels of yesteryear.  All the while, amid mounds of visual stimulation and historical contemplation, I do believe my choice of favorite Super Bowl ad, if I were to choose just one, has to go to the celebrity-studded work of comedy itself, one I’ll need to watch a couple more times to thoroughly absorb all its crisscrossing elements. This “winner” of which I speak, to my aforementioned surprise, is Audi.  The new A8 has arrived via advertising dominance!

Beer and chips sell themselves as far as I’m concerned.  This said, I do appreciate Dorito’s homoerotic undertones, intentional or not.  Meanwhile, the NFL itself touched the nostalgia nerve in a wonderful way.  And any appearance by the terrifically shameless Joan Rivers, complete in all her camp, always spells success.  Last night’s was no exception. Finally, with another nod to homoeroticism, let’s not forget to “cram it in the boot!”  Mini’s hysterical ad is most certainly my number three!

Out of all of this, including all I’m forgetting to mention, the car ads stand as my winners. I’m just sorry Betty White was too busy to make any appearance this time around!

All said, that’s my opinion!

Round Three

As the saying goes, the third time’s a charm!  In this case, it’s quite an attractive and muscular charm to boot.

The first generation was just that, the first attempt, albeit a respectable one with spacious room for maturation.  The second generation earned its place of uniqueness, at least when looked upon from its distinctive nose.  And now, the third generation is eminently upon us, otherwise known as the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK class.

Just as the BMW Z4 has grown up and filled out with each rebirth, so too, and better so may I say, has the SLK.  This new two-seater, retractable-hard-top roadster is simply stunning, taking some obvious styling cues, both inside and out, from its famous and stately uncle, the SLS.

No doubt the third generation SLK will see instant success when it comes to the U.S. this summer.  Overall, I’m impressed by such significant improvement in much of, though not all, MBZ styling in the past couple years.  Perhaps the elimination of Chrysler influence has something to do with it.

In any case, I look forward to spotting the all-new 2012 SLK out on the road, while of course checking it out up close for myself.  Round three will start before we know it!

And that’s my auto-styling opinion.

Happy 125th!

Wow.  It’s “auto overload” in the best of ways.  Today I stumbled across a website on which I could easily spend an entire evening.  If you too are not merely an auto enthusiast, but a true and dedicated admirer of all things Mercedes-Benz, then you too best visit this very fascinating and educational online destination.

Among numerous categories to explore, I highly recommend the virtual tour of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, in case you aren’t nearby to see it in person.  While I knew the Pullman 600 remained in production until 1980, and that the 300 SD was the world’s first turbodiesel production car, I was unaware that Princess Diana drove her own 500 SL for several months in 1992.  Suffice to say, a vast amount of MBZ history is elegantly showcased online, and the ultimate compilation is nothing short of extraordinary.

Speaking of history, this happens to be the 125th anniversary of German engineer Carl Benz’ unveiling of his “vehicle powered by gas engine.”  As such, 2011 is a year of celebration for Daimler AG, with the remembrance just this past weekend of one hugely pivotal historical event.  Check out this other very special site as well, connected to the first, to get 125 years of automotive history in 95 seconds, among all else!  After all, Carl Benz is regarded as the inventor of not just what became Mercedes-Benz, but of the gasoline-powered automobile all around.

Happy 125th birthday, Automobile!  And to think, I remember when you were a mere 100.

New? Not.

For a brief moment, I got excited.  Then upon closer inspection, I was underwhelmed.  Of course this is simply my first, instantaneous reaction based solely on outward appearance.  There could be a lot more going on that I do not yet see.

No, I’m not talking about a date or meeting someone new, though I suppose it could sound this way.  The matter at hand is the 2012 Audi A6, introduced to the U.S. last week at the Detroit Auto Show.

More and more cars look alike these days; styling has grown rather clone-like and uninspiring over the past decade especially.  When a popular manufacturer such as Audi unveils an “all-new” model, I do get excited to see something, well… new!  So in this case of the “new” A6, the headlights have been granted new shape.  Ok, fine.  Is this all?  Sure, the back end is different, and I will say better, than the outgoing A6.  Still, it looks just like the current A4, and not too far off from the recent “redux” of the A8.  All in all, and again, merely upon initial impression, I’m looking not at something “new,” but rather at a slightly tweaked punch of the same old cookie cutter.

Perhaps Audi could learn a lesson from Jaguar.  Now THERE is new!

And yep… that’s my opinion.
