Epic It Is.

An "Epic" sip and nibble.

My next out-of-town visitor could be in for a treat, of sorts.  The $5 “Sommeliers’ Selection” proves refreshingly drinkable, and while the delicious crab cake– or crab nugget as it could more appropriately be called– is a mere morsel, for only $3 who’s complaining?  Order another one!  For quantity over quality if you must, the bowl of potato curls and skins– while setting you back another $3– looks like the way to go.  This is Happy Hour after all, so indulge in some affordable doses of happiness while taking in a stunning Bay Bridge view that any tourist is sure to appreciate as much as I did.

4:30 seems like the ideal time to hit it, as seating should still be plentiful.  After 5:00, as the hungry and thirsty crowds pour in– combined with a somewhat awkward seating configuration– your body-parking choices and wiggle room will inevitably diminish.  Either way, that Happy Hour bar menu remains in full swing until 6:30.  And if you’re staying for a full dinner, well– that’s another blog post altogether!  Impressed I certainly was, as my impending guests likely will be.  Social, savory, scenic, and in more than name alone, it’s Epic.

“Not Bad”

Have you ever seen or tasted a fried chicken cake?  Actually it’s called a “chicken-n-waffles” cake to be exact, and for me this was indeed a first.  Different, rich and “not bad” are my words to sum it up.  If your taste buds are so inclined, you may wish to sample such creative baking for yourself — chicken cake and more — at Monet’s Cakes on 2nd Street and Mission in Downtown San Francisco.  I think I’m hearing something about chocolate and bacon as well.

Thumbs Up.

No complaints from me this time.  Unlike my last Castro neighborhood Asian dinner, this one quickly proved itself a strong and flavorful winner.  Now, even after spicy beef, spicy eggplant, fried dumplings and ham rangoon, I have yet to scratch the surface of the extensive menu.  Considering my great satisfaction with this first dinner, no doubt doing so will be a welcome, pleasant and delicious task.  Thumbs up to Brandy Ho’s.

Room for Improvement

My first meal was average.  My second one was passable at best.  Suffice to say, after two dinners involving two very different menu selections, I’m sorry to say I remain unimpressed.  Plus, eyeballing some other plates around me, I saw nothing else I’d rather have chosen.

The patio is pretty and pleasant, while the cocktail choices are creative, attractive and ample.  The food however, involving dry and fatty meat among all else, holds significant room for improvement.  While quantity is generous, quality comes up short.

Still, don’t rest solely on my opinion.  Give Nirvana a try for yourself the next time you’re in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco.  The setting is inviting and relaxing, and you can certainly enjoy those cocktails under some mature, tropical-like outdoor foliage that, to me, channels Waikiki’s long-gone Tahitian Lanai.  As far as food is concerned, as long as you keep your expectations low, you just might be satisfied.

I may or may not go for round three.  We’ll see.

A Refreshing Pair

A surprisingly refreshing partnership

These sound delicious, and I’ll gladly give them a try on my next visit.  On my first encounter this past weekend, however, I opted for the light, refreshing and healthy watermelon/tomato salad.  While no doubt this pairing is well-known in the culinary world, it’s not one I’ve contemplated before now.  Impressive and satisfying as my selection was, I just might have to creatively combine these two ingredients at home.

In the meantime, give the watermelon salad a whirl for yourself, as an appropriate palette-starter to that fried chicken.  Oh, and where?  The NE corner of 8th and Folsom, at Citizen’s Band.

I’ll Be Back

On this auspicious occasion of my father’s birthday, I finally acted on his months-old suggestion to visit the House of Shields.  The website states upfront:  “In keeping with tradition, there is no clock on premises, nor is there a T.V.”  I must add:  There is no designated happy hour– as in no drink specials– and also, perhaps contrary to my father’s half-century-old recollection, no food.  In 103 years of history, solid nourishment was served once upon a time, I’m told.  Alas, no longer is this the case.  So do not show up hungry!

What does exist is a convenient if not surprisingly small spot to get a decent drink in San Francisco’s financial district, anytime throughout the afternoon long into the evening.  On the city’s sizable list of historical watering holes, the House of Shields has clearly earned its place, obviously having served countless thirsty patrons throughout the decades.  From the intricate woodwork, to the detailed tile, and even to the seemingly original bathroom, you can tell this special place has been around a while and deserves respect.  I only wish the overall tone were a bit warmer.  Fortunately my acceptably sized Hendricks martini upped the temperature a bit.  All in all, I’ll be back!

At 65…

Thinking of former President Bill Clinton on his 65th birthday today, I would have imagined he’d enjoy one of those chicken fried steak dinners I discussed earlier this week, if not a nice big filet or rib eye.  But no!  Nothing of the sort is in store for the now-health-conscious former burger lover on this occasion, or any occasion for that matter.  Bill has apparently, to my and perhaps your surprise, gone vegan!

I certainly recognize the need to adjust and monitor one’s diet in the wake of clogged arteries and bypass surgery.  At the same time, I must wonder if doing so really requires foregoing all items derived from animals.  Is this not taking healthy eating to the unnecessary and unenjoyable extreme?  There’s plenty of “good” meat in a healthy diet, no?  Even though he’s in far better health today than a decade ago,  Bill is now looking TOO thin, and dare I say older than his age.  At 65, he appears he could use a little…er… meat, on his bones.

But that’s just my carnivorous opinion.  Happy Birthday Mr. President, cigar or no cigar!

Strike Out Ahead?

I’m not sure exactly how they’re doing it here in San Francisco, and perhaps I don’t want to know.  Suffice to say, two recent chicken fried steak meals at two different neighborhood establishments have yielded two strikes.  Less-desirable meat indeed it was, so overcooked and gravy-soaked so as to satisfactorily disguise the possible dog or cat I was actually consuming.

This is par for the course, of course.  Expectations for any such preparation should understandably remain low.  After all, chicken fried steak is one of those typically greasy, calorie-ridden, artery-clogging forms of “comfort food” meant to be enjoyed as an occasional indulgence– one you know is bad for you but you’re going to treat yourself nonetheless.

So comes my point.  My two recent attempts at “comfort food indulgence” were not all that comfortable.  At the somewhat trendy Blue, the chicken fried steak was rather soggy, detached and bland.  Strike One.  At greasy spoon Orphan Andy’s, what emerged as a chewy, dried-out hockey puck fortunately did not leave any lasting effects.  Strike Two.

I know there has to be a decent “CFS” here in the City; it simply remains to be discovered.  Will the third time be a charm or a strike out?

The Winning Tangerine

If you’ve ever wondered what lamb lollipops and pea mash have in common, here’s your answer:

They both appear on the same menu of one very inviting and satisfying San Francisco dining establishment.  After numerous occasions of walking past the Castro-adjacent corner of 16th and Sanchez, examining the window-posted menu, and telling myself I need to give this place a go, last night it finally happened.  Excellent company in tow for an early (17:30) sitdown, Tangerine deliciously delighted our evening.

As you’ve certainly heard me say before, I always love a restaurant that instantly earns a return visit.  Unfortunately this is all too often not the case.  As such, after a couple rather forgettable meals in the same neighborhood over the past week alone, last night’s last-minute selection proved all the more refreshing.

Lamb lollipops, intriguing by name alone, come through as a creatively substantial though thankfully not-too-filling starter.  Butternut squash soup, rich in both flavor and portion, in itself might satiate a light consumer.  Tangerine’s fried calamari is nothing unusual, rather bland in fact, while their standard yet still-zesty whole romaine caesar salad lacks whole anchovies.  Both have their places on the table nonetheless.  My spicy seafood gumbo emerged a clear winner, striking a pleasing balance of salmon, shrimp, calamari and diced vegetables.  The most visually stimulating presentation of our meal was the large salmon fillet, nestled into a bed of richly seasoned pea mash that looks just like, well, pea green mashed potatoes!  So full were the three of us, that we regretfully passed on the coconut sorbet, this time.

Tangerine wins, and your dissatisfaction would come as a shock.  No doubt the pleasant staff will be seeing me again before too long.  Quite likely it will be on another Wednesday for that complementary glass of wine!

No Substitute…

Insightful and thorough as the article happens to be, still I’m left asking myself, “Why bother?”

Granted, perhaps out on a picnic in a non-glass-friendly location, a slight though unconvincing advantage could take hold.  Such a purchase even recently appeared on a weekend country retreat at which I was in attendance, though no requirement steered this decision.  Expansion of variety and possible enhancement of quality notwithstanding, the bottom line remains:  There is no substitute for the bottle, a corked one that is.

The opening words of the NYT piece say it best:  IT’S the epitome of déclassé, the vinous equivalent of trailer trash, the wine snob’s worst nightmare. No, I don’t mean the screw cap. I’m talking about boxed wine.

The choices are increasing, but why?

In times when quantity trumps quality, most likely in quickly serving a large group of undiscerning palates en masse in the middle of nowhere, perhaps– perhaps– the boxes could be argued as the way to go.  But sitting one on your own kitchen counter for weeks on end?  Again, why?  “The craziest thing” indeed.  As far as I’m concerned you’re still better off with “Two Buck Chuck” and a corkscrew, especially where cost is a factor.

And that’s my out-of-the-box opinion!

Now I Know.

So much has already been written, that it looks like there’s not much more for me to say.  What I WILL say, quite simply, is that I entirely concur with the numerous positive reviews out there.  I’m thrilled to have been turned on this week to a unique and impressive dining destination of which until now I was unaware.  Everyone else in San Francisco seems to know it, but perhaps I can use the excuse of still being relatively new to town.  Or maybe not.  In any event, now I know Bix.

“This retro-modern supper club, now 21 years old, has a speakeasy vibe. It’s located on a narrow street in the shadows of the Transamerica Pyramid, and you almost feel like you need a secret password to get through the darkened entryway. However, the impressive Deco-inspired interior opens up to reveal a grand space that includes a mezzanine supported by ornate columns. Bartenders expertly mix classic drinks, and chef Bruce Hill gives modern twists to some familiar dishes. There’s also live jazz nightly.”  (Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants)

Don’t be too alarmed by the deceivingly small gin glasses; I quickly got past them, especially after spotting my always favorite and rarely found steak tartare on the menu!  I can’t wait to go back and have it, no doubt dressed in smart evening attire to complement Bix’ grand and elegant atmosphere.  The booths are quite roomy, so you just might have to join me.

Not Just Satisfied…

Spicy means spicy, and rare means rare.  Anytime these two vital culinary keywords prove themselves, I know I’ve found a dining establishment worthy of my repeat business.

The chicken curry is positively delicious, fire-breathing upon request of course, by far the best I’ve tasted in recent memory.  A half-fries-half-rice accompaniment works very well, yielding an overall portion that’s probably gargantuan for many, while nicely satisfying for yours truly.

The pepper cheese-jalapeno burger called out to me as well, or perhaps I should say it was mooing as the big rare patty arrived to the table, nestled in a soft, round sourdough bun, alongside a heaping mound of crisp mixed greens.  Having asked beforehand if the chef would walk the cow past the stove, the answer from the waitress was an immediate and emphatic “oh yes.”  I knew I was in the right place, even before discovering the weekly liver-n-onions special!

The fried calamari appetizer is standard fare, surprisingly modest in quantity.  Then again, you won’t want to fill up before your generous and carefully selected entrée.  You might join me in wishing for a garlic or chipotle aioli in place of the calamari’s basic cocktail sauce.

The fish-and-chips remain to be tried, as do the ribs, which hopefully won’t have run out next time.  If I don’t hit the right day for the liver, I’ll just have to hit the curry again, this time with shrimp.  Whatever the selection, it all gets washed down with one of many import drafts.  Be sure to have company with you, as did I, so as to sample and share more than one plate.

The large open space is instantly inviting, with plenty of bar stools and high-top tables to be had.  The numerous wall-mounted flatscreens allow you to see your sporting event from all angles, while the variety of country flags on the ceiling create a pleasant international flair.

I’m always love it when I’m not just satisfied, but thoroughly impressed, with my first visit to a neighborhood dining establishment, especially one in walking distance of my home that’s been on my list for some time.  I’ll back, sooner than later, to Martin Macks.

Gua-La-La!

A one-of-a-kind living room window view.

After almost a year of intent, I finally made it.  The small coastal town of Gualala, some 120 miles north of San Francisco, welcomed my motorcycle and me for a brief yet lovely stay this week.  Actually, it’s my fabulous lifelong friend and her hoot of a husband who did the welcoming.  The town itself, fortunately, seemed to be on board with my arrival.

Altogether, this 250-mile roundtrip motorcycle journey was scenic, relaxing and of course on some stretches of twisty Hwy 1, challenging!  Coming just after an oil change, new brake pads and new brake fluid earlier this week, my sturdy and reliable SV could not have performed better, at least not at the still-somewhat gentle hands of its cautious handler.

With a business appointment already scheduled in Santa Rosa this week, I figured I was already halfway to the residence of my dear friend, so why not?  My conclusion:  A trip most worthwhile, especially thanks to ideal weather conditions.  The route to Gualala is beautiful, the town warm and inviting, the views spectacular, and last but certainly not least, the food absolutely delicious!

If and when you find yourself rolling along the northern California coast, whether by two wheels or four, or more, make Gualala one of your stops.  If you’re lucky enough to hit the town on taco night at Trink’s, you’ll be in for a true and unexpected culinary delight.  Crab, shrimp, pork or beef, or one or several of each, these generous and flavorful gourmet tacos far surpass any that I can recall in the “big city.”  Be sure to get there early or prepare to wait, because despite any visible life on the streets, the place was packed!  And on a Wednesday no less!

Join me sometime soon, preferably on your own motorized set of two wheels.  You too might just find yourself saying “Gua-la-la!”

“You Won’t Like It”

“Like other bitters, Campari has a strong aroma and a characteristic flavor which some consumers find overwhelming when consumed straight.”  (wisegeek.com)

In other words, a lot of people can’t stand Campari.  It’s most definitely an “acquired taste” as many say.  And as I always say to anyone who’s about to try it for the first time:  “You won’t like it.”  Most times I stand correct. 

Not that this is a bad thing.  In fact, it’s rather good I say, in that there will always be more Campari for yours truly, while rarely if ever will anyone fight me to share the bottle.  After all, this famous yet still somewhat mysterious Italian aperitif remains my very favorite and most often enjoyed alcoholic beverage.

So I’m a little late for the party, as Campari is now closer to its 151st birthday than its sesquicentennial.  Nonetheless, it’s my true delight to have effortlessly obtained one of the above-pictured limited edition 150th anniversary bottles yesterday, the middle one to be exact.  The inexplicable mystery remains, however, as to how such a welcome acquisition took me so many months, considering the bottles debuted last summer.  All I will say on this is, as with most good things:  Better late than never!

If you’re one of those inquisitive and daring types who’s never yet tried Campari, I recommend you do so first on ice with soda water.  Then, you might opt for an orange juice mix.  For a stronger drink, mix it with gin or vodka.  Or for a lighter refreshment, pour a splash into some chilled (and inexpensive) white wine.

If all options have failed you and I stand correct once again, I’ll of course be more than happy to relieve you of your surely closer-to-full bottle of red Italian mystery. 

Campari:  Truly a pleasure I will never go long without.  You’re always welcome to join me, even at risk of my having to share.

“Famously American”

I’ve been meaning to mention yet another dining establishment that’s, well, worth a mention.  “If you happen to find yourself anywhere near Westlake Village” is what I was about to say, until to my surprise at not already knowing, The Grill On The Alley is happy to welcome us to multiple locations.

A modern-day upscale American grill is how I myself might choose to describe it.  It’s as if large seating areas, contemporary espresso-colored woodwork and elaborate bar displays have propelled my much-revered Musso’s or Tadich well into the 21st century, while maintaining a classic Chicago-style menu.  This means, naturally, that the selections are vast and the portions more than ample.  Simply put, you WILL be fed, and in style to boot!

The proper balance of modern and classic is always important.  At The Grill, “modern” means the martini glasses are at least 10 ounces and filled to the top, versus those irksome 7-ounce glasses at the old-school establishments.  Then, “classic” means The Grill offers a delicious calf’s liver entrée.  Any guess at what I ordered?

The Grill On The Alley clearly succeeds in this balance.  While looking forward to my next visit, I won’t have to return to Ventura County, as San Jose is much closer.  Then of course, I’m confident that any location is just as “famously American” as the next.

And that’s my own balanced opinion.

On The Grill…

Of the several places around town that made my birthday yesterday quite memorable, my lunch spot definitely stands out.  After three months of intent, I finally dined, quite pleasingly so, at the historic Tadich Grill.

I expected to be satisfied.  My expectation was met, hands down.  The menu, while interesting in its extensive selection, was unnecessary; I knew my meal selection well in advance.  After all, Tadich’s version of my always favorite calf’s liver and onions awaited my comparison to the same dish at Little Joe’s.  Both preparations are delicious and unique unto themselves, excusing me from declaring one clearly better than the other.  Whereas Little Joe serves thinner multiple pieces in a rich sauce,  Tadich presents one very large and thick steak off the grill, adorned by a topping of rich sautéed onions.

For any and all of you liver lovers, Tadich Grill is a must.  If your palate calls for something else, your menu choices clearly abound.  My dining companion, for one, seemed to enjoy his very attractive and ample halibut steak.  A Negroni, overflowing in its old-school-sized glass, served as my chosen cocktail accompaniment, though naturally the full bar will accommodate your libation preference.

For its decades upon decades of history, Tadich reminds me very much of Hollywood’s Musso & Frank Grill.  If you know and appreciate Musso’s, you’ll certainly discover some positive words of your own on Tadich.  My next visit will come long before my next birthday, at which time I’ll expect to find even more good to share on the grill.

Less for More?

It’s what happens when I’m away from West Hollywood for an extended period:  The Abbey remodels, expands, and changes its menu, again.

I don’t recall exactly the last time I visited the Abbey before my lunch yesterday.  Even when I still lived in L.A., my visits grew rare.  As such, it had been quite a while for me, as I arrived yesterday to multiple changes in progress.

The bathroom area expansion appears sensible and well designed.  The new VIP “peninsulas” may be the preferred place to sit, if you don’t need much table space.  I miss the island bar, though not nearly as much as I do the cozy lounging cabanas.  The latter have been replaced by large tables and bench seating, sans curtains.  It’s just not the same.

Also not the same is the menu, as it’s undergone yet another reinvention.  While the BLT and burgers remain ample in portion, the famous heaping pile of nachos has been cut down in size by almost half, now with a higher price to boot.  Don’t you just love getting less for more?  Thankfully, the martinis have not been scaled back, while holding steady at a barely-palatable $12.  I recommend the cucumber.

Perhaps I’ll pay another visit in a few months when I’m back in town again, at which time all the current rear bar construction will no doubt be complete.  Then, perhaps, the Abbey will have finally grown to its limit, or not.  I have a feeling the menu will look different, if not offering less for more.

And that’s my hungry and thirsty opinion.

Erin go Bragh!

The “greenest” day of the year has come once again, and yours truly is very much here for it!  Having survived the Ides, it’s now high time to break out my infamous green suit and celebrate every last Irish part of myself on this always auspicious St. Patrick’s Day!

San Francisco surprisingly held its St. Patrick’s Day parade last Saturday, as did Chicago, both far too early in my opinion.  Why not have them on the real day, I ask.  A friend told me that in SF’s financial district, many workers go to lunch on this day and never make it back to the office.  A parade might just be a far more excusable justification for this than a pub.  However, since no parade awaits our city’s Irish and/or Irish-spirited partygoers today, it looks like the Irish pubs will be the destination “an lae.”   Then, as no green river flows in this vicinity, with a nod to Chicago’s wonderful Irish tradition, there’s likely not much “green” to see outdoors today anyway.

If you’re in Chicago today, go see if there’s any green left in the river!  If you’re in San Francisco, head here, or here, or here!  If you’d rather sit home with your own homemade corned beef & cabbage and a bottle of Jameson, then be sure to freshen up on your SPD history, as plenty awaits.

7.52 Miles

Here’s a prime illustration of how much, or little, I’ve ridden my motorcycle over the past few months since moving to San Francisco: 

Last November 1, on the one-year anniversary of my moto ownership, my odometer read 18,103.  Yesterday, on our Homoto ride down Hwy 1 and through Woodside, 133 days later, my odometer passed 19,103.  Simply put, it’s taken me nearly four and a half months to ride 1000 miles!  This equates to a whopping 7.52 miles per day.

Of consistent yet short-range use of late.

It’s not that my big red two-wheeled machine goes neglected; I’m on it regularly.  Except for a couple of weekend excursions and one round trip to Sacramento, however, the bulk of my moto use has been in and around San Francisco itself.  While a motorcycle is an enjoyable and practical way to navigate the city, naturally the mileage does not accumulate.  This is a far cry from last spring in Los Angeles, when I logged 3,000 miles in six weeks!

Nonetheless, yesterday’s approximately 100-mile journey was some good exercise, for my engine rather than my body, that is!  It’s always enjoyable to get out on the scenic roads, at least until the rain starts coming down!  Riding north on Hwy 280 in a downpour was the less-than-enjoyable part of the day.  Fortunately, the hearty burger and fries at Sullivan’s gave me the energy to deal with it and get back to the city in one piece.

Now, with spring upon is, let’s see how long it takes to log the next 1000.  Thanks the today’s ongoing rain and overall wetness, it looks like the next 7.52 will have to wait.

Better Than Cow

More Than Moo...

My bison steak dinner at Big Four this past weekend was so deliciously satisfying, that it’s still on my mind three days later.  Several bison meals have generously satisfied my demanding hunger over the years, especially in Kansas where such meat rules the land.  I must go so far as to say, however, that Big Four’s preparation is definitely the best I’ve had to date.

Dense, lean and wonderfully intense in natural flavor, bison meat far outshines the best cut of any standard cow, if I may say so.  If you’re the adventurous, discerning and hungry carnivore that I am, a bison dinner should in no way disappoint you.  Certainly have it at Big Four if you’re anywhere near San Francisco.  Then, if you’re the home-cooked type, this useful website will come in handy.

Words of Wine

“The wine is deep ruby red in color and is exploding with spicy cherry and earthy raspberry aromas, with a hint of anise and white pepper. The palate delivers flavors of black cherry framed nicely by bright acidity and ripe mouth coating tannins.”

If you were to taste this wine without having read the above description, would you snap to attention and shout out:  “Spicy Cherry!  Earthy Raspberry!  White Pepper!”  Or rather, are such words forming and steering your experience for you, before you can even begin to consider your own true reaction?

If such words of wine have you tongue-tied if not palate-confused, then it’s high time for a read of this very well-written and informative article in today’s New York Times. Decide for yourself if you’re one for “sweet,” or for “savory,” or if you have some another, better words altogether.  In any case, with a nod to the article, I’m certainly one for streamlining the efficiency of clarifying our wine preferences.  Perhaps you are too.

While such typical wine-tasting descriptions can be creative and marketable exercises in palate anticipation, they are typically, if not always, open to interpretation.  At least that’s my wine-loving opinion!

Have a Bite…

They might be called the ultimate comfort food, definitely unique and delicious.  “Spicy Irish Potato Bites” at The Chieftain, those I discovered and briefly mentioned here back in November, seem to satisfy the most growling palate.  Just be sure to specify “well done” so that they’re not cold in the middle, as I learned the first time around.

More than what you might imagine as a “bite,” these clever pub morsels are large, deep-fried balls of mashed potatoes, complete with jalapeno pieces baked inside to earn their “spicy” label.  Five of them for $7.95 are a great and filling deal, especially on a cold rainy day when you find yourself anywhere near San Francisco’s northwest corner of 5th and Howard.

The bites don’t fail.  What does fail is the special $4.00 Bombay martini with which you might opt to wash down your bites.  Whether bartender skill or price justification, the pour level is horrifically low.  And if you’ve ever had a drink with me, you know my sensitivity to low pours!  To avoid such potential suffering, I recommend a draft, preferably a Killkenny, as the suitable bite accompaniment.

And this is just the beginning of a complete Irish Pub menu.  The corned beef, ahi burger and fish-n-chips await sampling and review.  Considering the Chieftain celebrates its first decade anniversary next month, now you have one more reason to pay a visit and have a bite!

Dining “Trip”

My “trip” to the Folsom neighborhood restaurant Triptych might be worth a mention. 

I could tell you about the open, airy seating space surrounded by tall walls of attractive artwork, almost as if you were dining in a small, intimate gallery.  If I were to address the inviting wine and beer bar that offers a very unique selection of imported drafts, I’d say you could comfortably sip your selection while appreciating a peaceful atmosphere quite conducive to pleasant table conversation. 

Then, I could go on eliminate the bland, undercooked crabcake sandwich from my menu recommendations, while yawning at the rather pedestrian breaded pork loin.  I’d suggest instead you consider the hearty lamb chops with well-cooked bok choy, if not the heaping bowl of eye-turning paella.

But who am I to say, after all?  I’d just be writing up yet another restaurant review, and you’d simply be getting my own opinion, again.  Perhaps I should let you take your own dining trip to Triptych, where you can sip, taste and decide for yourself.

A Full Belly

My first dining visit to Starbelly came last night, after having heard about the popular Castro eating establishment more than once in recent weeks.  So of course this means a review is in order.

To get the major minuses out of the away:  The tables are quite small, and the seating not too comfortable.  If you don’t mind parking yourself on a wooden bench or metal chair, while inadvertently eavesdropping on the conversation next to (and very close to) you, then keep reading.

The food itself:  Interesting, adventurous and mostly satisfying.  The chicken liver pate, with onion marmalade and grain mustard accompanied by toasted sourdough:  Absolutely divine, easily earning its place as my favorite of the night.  The mussel dish:  Tasty as mussels go, though paired rather oddly with mexican chorizo, creating a flavor competition I would not have expected.  The spaghetti:  Ambitious, as surprisingly thick noodles lead a welcome scattering of sliced jalapenos, mixed with slices of thick bacon that seemed to excite my dining companion more than they did me.  The squash, goat cheese and black garlic pizza:  A clear winner, proving its strength through a refreshing combination of flavors that for some odd reason yielded me a slight taste of Hawaii.  All of this, washed down with a soothing Malbec, made for a unique, though not unparalleled, culinary experience.

Starbelly, despite heightened audibility, limited limb-waving space and unforgiving landings for your rear, is certainly worth a repeat visit.  After all, the thick rare burgers on the table next to me were loudly calling!

Taste it all for yourself, if you haven’t already.  Your belly, like mine, will be full.  The rest is not too much to stomach.

And that’s my (palate’s hunger-driven) opinion.

Irish on Capitol Hill

All of my bar and restaurant reviews here thus far have been of establishments in the Bay Area, until now.

I highly recommend that the next time you’re in our nation’s capitol, you head on over for a few rounds, a hearty meal, and then of course a few more rounds at Kelly’s Irish Times.  As Irish Pubs are my favorite casual social drinking and eating environment, it’s pleasing to find a spot of such robust merriment and revelry nestled within a neighborhood of otherwise buttoned-up and typically quiet Capitol Hill culture.

The pieces of history on the walls, to which I’m attracted in any city, are unprecedented at Kelly’s.  In fact, the description is already written for me on their website:

“Known the world over, not only for being one of the most celebrated Irish Pub’s in America, but for Kelly’s famous wall. With over 100+ years of history gracing this facade, you see details such as 1930’s Dublin Police Patches; one-of-a-kind unopened beer bottles from the 1800s; antique galvanized ice buckets from Glascow; torn Redskins Superbowl tickets, Sonny Jurgensen autographs and a multitude of celebrity/politician what-nots.”

This, combined with live music, generous drinks and a mean fish sandwich, should more than make your evening.  Just steps from Union Station, you’ll easily get there from just about any part of town via Metro.  It’s just around the corner from the Capitol Hill Hyatt, if you happen to be staying there as I was. 

If you love Irish Pubs like I do, you’ll be glad you paid the Irish on Capitol Hill a visit.  I certainly am!

The Culinary Jackpot

Don’t you just love it when you try out a certain restaurant for the first time, and the meal is not just good but truly epic?  Such was the case for me last night, with my virgin visit to Little Joe’s on 5th and Mission.

All too often we give a new place a go, and the experience is… meh.  So when we do actually hit the culinary jackpot, it’s definitely an occasion to be celebrated and remembered.  Little Joe’s deserves plenty of celebration, that’s for sure!

I was on a spontaneous quest for a good liver and onions, as I simply had the craving and had not yet enjoyed the dish here in San Francisco.  After asking around and doing an internet search, my dining destination was quickly set.

Little Joe’s is an Italian restaurant, and let me remind you:  The Italians know how to feed us!  The portions are more than generous, as they should be.  The perfectly cooked liver, topped with mouth-watering sautéed onions, consumed the plate.  As such, my heaping side of hot kidney bean salad sat on its own.  Along came bread as well, and with it the most divine chopped garlic spread… intensely, fantastically garlicky, let me tell you!  The Chianti washed it all down smoothly.

Suffice to say, I wanted a GOOD meal, and I hit the bullseye!  Not only was it good, it was refreshingly old school, and an epic experience that made my entire night.  You simply must head on over to Little Joe’s right away, especially if you love liver!  If not, you’ll have plenty from which to choose off of the extensive and reasonably priced menu.  The space is hopping with energy, comfortably filled with lively patrons seated around a scattering of intriguing pictorial history on the walls.  My only suggestion to Little Joe’s is that they dim their bright ceiling lights a bit, as it would enhance the ambiance all the more.

Absolutely, divinely, beyond delicious.  I hit the culinary jackpot.  May my next dining discovery be this perfect!

One Last Look

Here on the second to last day of the year, it’s just about time to take one last look at the Christmas tree and start putting all the decorations away.  Perhaps some of you are well past me!

Shining at the Ritz!

One very lovely tree on which to cast a final glance, and perhaps take your Christmas card photo for next year, is this one in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco.  Do note, you can do so while sipping a well-sized and reasonably priced martini!

Tree or no tree, the lobby bar at the Ritz is a fantastic spot to visit for an early-evening martini or two.  For the same $11 you’ll pay for a shaken, straight-up Absolut in any dreary, tacky and/or ordinary establishment around the city, at the Ritz your surprisingly modest drink price also buys you some relaxing and comfortable moments of traditional elegance, well-dressed people watching, and a small tray of taro chips on which to nibble.

Do stop in the next time you’re strolling around Nob Hill.  Of course if you want that Christmas card photo, you best go right now!

A Big Piece of History

How is it that until now, I was unaware of such a fabulous establishment?  Thankfully I seem to be meeting the right people to introduce me to the right places. 

Big 4, not to be confused with Big 5, is a uniquely inviting destination of true old-school San Francisco.  If you really know the city, you probably already appreciate this highlight of the Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill.  From the welcoming and jovial piano player, to the generous stools around the elegant wood bar, to… most of all… a huge and amazing dose of city history, Big 4 is a rich experience to be had, certainly more than once.

The history of which I speak is a blown-up photographic mural of the city, along an entire back wall of the restaurant.  Everything… the homes, the buildings, the various stages of development around town… can be seen in fascinating detail.  The year:  1878.  As you can guess, most everything we see in the mural was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906.  Be sure your drink is full as you head for your viewing, because like me, you may want to stay a while.  This is, quite literally, a big piece of history.

Speaking of drinks, one strike against Big 4 is the martini stemware.  My manhattan was surprisingly and disturbingly small.  Perhaps this is just another old-school element of the establishment, in line with the rest.  Still, I would hope the bar decides to come up a notch in martini size before too long.

I will definitely be returning to Big 4 for dinner very soon, for further history absorption and in spite of the drink size.  I recommend you pay a visit as well.  The antelope on the menu sounds absolutely delicious!

When Rare Means Rare

I always appreciate any time when rare means rare!  That’s how I eat a high-end burger; just walk the cow past the stove, or bring me the raw patty if you must.  There’s no greater vexation in my book than an establishment that somehow confuses RARE with medium or some other ghastly term for overcooking.

Fortunately, my time in Los Angeles this week has bled more praise out of me than complaint, at least on the burger front.  I’m therefore very happy to come to you now with two very delicious yet different burger recommendations for the next time you’re wandering around the greater L.A. area.

First:  Father’s Office in Santa Monica.  Their burger is already famous, as word-of-mouth and the written reviews have indicated.  As I never trust anyone else’s opinion before my own, it was well past time I lost my Father’s Office virginity this week.  The baguette is fresh and generously portioned, covering two delicious cheeses (one of them gruyere I believe), a small-leafed mixed green blend (including arugula), carmelized onions, and mouth-watering, properly cooked, ample beef!  Go for it… It’s well worth the $12.50.  (There’s a Father’s Office in Culver City as well.)

Second:  Fleming’s.  While it’s a high-end chain, I’m going off my experience at the one in Woodland Hills.  As the bartender there proclaims, with which I agree, Fleming’s has the best happy hour in town!  We’re talking a huge (and I mean HUGE) properly cooked burger, on a brioche bun with one of three cheeses of your choosing, onions, iceberg wedge, tomato and chipotle mayo, presented with two huge onion rings to boot!  The overall style is more traditional than the aforementioned, but I’ll say the quantity is greater.  Most of all, the price is less:  $6.00!  Can’t beat it.  Go!

In both cases, rare is rare, thankfully enough.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Would you?
